Join us for an interactive workshop mapping Armenian New York! Garine Boghossian will introduce the Armenian mental mapping tradition through the lens of counter-mapping, and guide us in creating our own collective map of Armenian NYC.

Over the last few years, Garine has collected Armenian mental maps created by genocide survivors in the diaspora. These maps are scattered across memory books held at the Library of Congress, which she was able to scan.

This workshop will bring together Armenians living in New York City for a collective mapping exercise to explore what “Armenian New York” looks like today. Participants will reflect on the spaces they frequent, feel at home in, or feel connected to. The goal is to produce a collective map that captures both well-known or historical sites—such as institutions, businesses, and gathering places—as well as more personal spaces that have offered community members a sense of home. These might include urban spaces that evoke memories or experiences from elsewhere, including the Armenian homeland.

Garine will facilitate the workshop by first introducing the Armenian mental mapping tradition, presenting maps created over a century ago that depict cities and villages across the Armenian homeland. From there, we will turn our focus to New York City and collaboratively create an Armenian NYC map.

About Garine Boghossian

Garine Boghossian is an architect, urbanist, and founder of An Armenian Atlas, based in New York. She is a senior urban designer at ORG New York, where she leads large-scale urban and regional planning projects worldwide. She is a visiting critic at Cornell University this semester and has taught architecture and urban design at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, and the Boston Architectural College. Garine is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the American University of Beirut. Her writing has appeared in Expansions (La Biennale di Venezia, 2021), The Funambulist, Broken Nature, and Wasafiri.
